The Meridian — Carriage Map & Layout

A working schematic so chapters place things consistently. The train is miles long with dozens of carriage classes; this pins what the books have actually established and marks the rest as approximate. When a scene needs a carriage number, take a pinned one if it fits, or an approximate one from the right band — and log any new fixed number back here.

Orientation (read this first)

  • The engine is at the front. Carriage numbers climb toward the rear. Low number = forward = toward the engine = wealth, warmth, power. High number = rearward = open carriages, farms, cold, cheap passage. (motifs “forward/warm”.)
  • “Forward” and “the front” carry weight — they point at both the social top and the unknowable engine. Use the words deliberately.
  • The sub-floor service tunnels run beneath every carriage, with their own forward/rear logic and their own restricted boundary (FH-7). They are a second map under the first.
  • Section boundaries are soft. The order below is canon; the exact carriage where “First” becomes “middle” is not pinned — keep it fuzzy on the page.

First Carriages (~1–20) — front, wealthy, two-storey

Polished brass and velvet; carpeted corridors that swallow footfall; private upper-floor quarters by internal staircase; dining cars with real china. Lifetime tickets, guards, political weight.

  • Carriage 3, Carriage 7 — front First Carriages (referenced; wealthy).
  • Carriage 9 — two-storey: the Meridian Gazette office on the ground floor; wealthy private compartments above (Drummond’s compartment, B1).
  • Carriage 11 — the Gazette press is printed here every 14 days.
  • Carriage 12 — a front carriage with good windows; the window bench where Vashti watches the landscape (B3 Ch1/18). Public-access.
  • Carriage 14, Carriage 18 — First Carriages area.
  • Carriage 19Madame Vetch’s antiques shop (B1), where the tuning fork resonates near Elliot.

Front-middle / Administrative (~20s) — the bureaucratic centre

Quiet, orderly carriage(s) “near the front-middle” where the Conductor’s clerks manage tickets, manifests, passenger rolls, dispute records; the Conductor’s office adjoins.

  • The Administrative Carriage — Casper Noll’s workplace; deep records rooms.
  • Vashti’s Office — a small front-middle room given to her late in B3 (reward + leash).
  • Carriage 28 — front-middle (referenced).

The middle carriages (~28–55) — working class

Trades, services, markets, bunk-and-berth homes. Where most people live.

  • Carriage 31 / Carriage 32 — the FH-7 sub-floor boundary sits in the bulkhead between them (see Sub-floor below).
  • Carriage 35, Carriage 38 — middle (B3).
  • Carriage 40 — middle (B1).
  • Carriage 41Vashti Kade’s home (B3): semi-private bunks, durable arrangements, night-shift haulers and menders.
  • Carriage 44Della Roan’s home (B7): middle-carriage berth of the missing cartographer; where twenty years of network maps were hidden in coat-linings and bunk-boards. Her older berthmates persist as minor figures.
  • Carriage 45Ekka’s chit-counter at the back, paying out maintenance/engineering chits.
  • Carriage 52 — middle (B1).
  • The Maintenance Workshop — a low carriage between the freight cars and the laundry; Kettering’s middle-section crew bases here. (So: freight cars + laundry sit in this mid-to-rear band.)

The Tea Car — the crossroads (~mid-50s/60)

Birdie Wren’s carriage, sited between the open carriages and the working middle so the clientele is mixed. The information hub.

Open / lower carriages (~55–74) — cheap passage

Three-high bunks, hanging-sheet partitions, shared stove-plates, no privacy; drifters and new arrivals.

  • Carriages 59, 60, 61, 62, 67, 68, 69, 71, 73 — open/lower band (referenced across B1/B2).
  • Carriage 74Elliot’s first home; Fixer and Plum hold prime bunks near the rear wall.

Farm carriages — rearmost

Semi-open, slatted-side carriages with livestock and crops; produce hauled forward to the middle kitchens and markets. Towards the very rear, ahead of the rear coupling.

The back end, where Elliot first arrives/ is found in B1. The open carriages’ threshold to the outside and the wilds.


The sub-floor: service tunnels

A second network beneath every carriage — crawl-spaces ~4ft high, caged bulbs, gritted-mesh floors, pipework and pivots. Organised into non-overlapping maintenance sections along the train’s length; warmer forward, cooler rearward.

  • FH-7 (Hatch Forward Seven) — in the bulkhead between Carriages 32 and 31, the forward boundary of the middle-section crew’s authorisation. Ghosted plate: FORWARD OF THIS POINT — ENGINEERING ONLY. Unlocked — the boundary is structural, not enforced.
  • The forward tunnels — beyond FH-7, running under the front third of the train (≈ carriages 31→1) and on toward the engine. Maintained by a separate chain of workers the middle crew has never met. (So the First Carriages live above a sub-floor they have no access to — the closer to the engine, the more restricted the maintenance, which is the compartmentalisation theme made physical.)
  • Bellan’s Workshop — set into a widened section of the forward tunnels, ~4 carriages forward of FH-7 (beneath ≈ Carriage 27).
  • The chain extends, by implication, all the way to the engine. No one has confirmed where it ends. See rules → Compartmentalised Labour Structure and side-stories/canon-notes.

The Calloway — layout (less mapped, looser)

Book Two’s train. Numbered like the Meridian, but its classes are marked by colour-banded sections rather than implied by number, and displayed openly.

  • Colour bands (forward → rear): red (forward, high status), gold, green, blue (rear). Banners at the windows announce class before the carriage number does.
  • Sable’s Court — a wide carriage near the front; half throne room, half dinner party.
  • The Record Hall / archive — bigger, louder, more oral than the Meridian’s; in the green section.
  • The gold market — where Mette’s bread alcove sits.
  • Carriage 27, Berth 8Maren Toll’s berth (mid-section; curtain not door); entered by the killer via the Berth 7 maintenance hatch.
  • Carriage 14 — where Toll originally boarded via the crossing-point gangway seven years earlier.
  • The Crossing Platform — the parallel-track stretch where the gangways are thrown; the four-hour clock of B2.

(The Calloway is intentionally less pinned than the Meridian — flesh it out as B2 work demands, and log fixed points here.)
